Silver Gelatin Prints…
This Page is not yet Completed
Love at first print, more than a half century ago I made my first B&W print from a projected 35mm negative (Kodak plus-x pan) on 4″x5″ Dupont Velour Paper in a not so light tight closet. This combination of projected negative and Silver Gelatin emulsion represents the overwhelming majority of my printing in the past 50 years. Due to the high volume of “wasted paper” to achieve a perfect print along with the environmental impact and high cost of raw material, I have transitioned to a hybrid process of digital large format film negative mentioned above and the “new standard in photoprint making” the digital ink print for its economy low environmental impact.
Something new something old and something borrowed. I offer this print from original camera film images as a more environmentally responsible process. Image manipulation is limited to the same variable in traditional film projection printing, this process eliminates wasted photo paper, chemistry, paper and water. This is a hybrid process of transferring a digital asset (image data) to a large format film negative for contact printing to traditional Silver Gelatin (light sensitive) paper on a vacuum easel. The aesthetic qualities of the print are that of traditional “light-film-lens-paper” processes with with a fraction of the waste in heavy metals, chemistry, etc. Darkroom conditions, material handling and tray processing will result in some variation between prints, making every print unique.
